Some symphonies have had names attached to them, not always by the composer. Some are arguably more suitable than others. Suggestions for improvements to these names, or names for symphonies hitherto unnamed, are welcome. Might I suggest:
Haydn's Symphony No. 18: The Franchise
Haydn's Symphony No. 70: The Speed Limit
Mahler's Symphony No. 9: The 'Don't Tempt Fate'
Any Nielsen symphony (take your pick): The Unpronounceable
Shostakovitch's Symphony No. 15: The 'Thank You Giacomo and Richard'.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5: The 'Come In, It's Not Locked'.

There have been times when I have wondered if Nielsen missed a trick by not calling any of his "The Impenetrable", and I've definitely sat through Bruckner's "Interminable" (applicable to whichever I'm listening to). Sorry - my blind spots, my loss, I know!

I was listening to the Franck Symphony earlier, and given that I first knew it (almost) in Peter Warlock's irreverent arrangement, I always think of it as "The Codpiece".

Sibelius Symphonies:

No.1 - A Song of Ice and Fire
No.2 - The Battle Hymn of the Republic
No.3 - A Pastoral Symphony
No.4 - Dark is Life, is Death
No.5 - The Hymn of the Big Wheel

No.7 - In My End is My Beginning

Nielsen is an interesting case. 2-4 are, obviously, very aptly named: the Espansiva is his Pastoral, the mind broadening to greet the meadow, and the 4th is a great fount of volcanic fiery energy: "Inextinguishable".... “Inestinguibile”.... is a more original and poetical match for the music than it is usually given credit for. Hard to improve on these.
The 6th’s tag, the Semplice, is of course ironic, even sarcastic, in its denial and deflection. Somewhat akin to Mozart calling K563 a “Divertimento”.

But what of the 1st and 5th? One of the very greatest symphonies of the 20thC, the 5th was probably best left to speak for itself; he must have known what he had created; no limit to its many meanings, so no name to limit its suggestive power.
Similarly with No.1 - it announces its exuberant arrival in the musical world: “I am here, you better take me seriously”… perhaps it needs no more, unless one takes a cue from the 1st movement’s header: allegro orgoglioso….
But we don’t yet have “orgoglious” in English. Rather a shame really…

If you want to rename a musical work at least try to make it poetically apt (to the music) or funny; none of these are either.....
So here we are, another excuse for skittish Brucknerian insult....did you really have to..?...... oh, so sorry for taking the bait again!

Another depressingly trivialising thread (I tried to raise the tone of it), to which I shall contribute no further....
I am very close to leaving this demeaned and debased forum altogether.....

But for now, I'll find wisdom among the trees, birds and horses.....

I had hoped that the title of the thread would have made it clear that this is meant to be just a bit of fun inspired by the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme the name of which I've adapted.
