But coming before rather than after.....so wouldn't various adaptations of "prequel" be more apt?

No because they were obviously given numbers afterwards! I suppose they could have done the Schubert thing and confused everyone - imagine ordering Sym 4 and receiving Sym 2 on your mat or maybe Sym 1 if chronology was adjusted too!

We can take a few lessons from Star Wars....

But Bruckner: Symphony No.0 "The Prequellian" ... has a nice ring to it, no?
Still working on"00"....something more evocative than studiensymphonie.... come on, get thinking...
            So how about....

Bruckner: Symphony No 00 "The Primordial"....
            Bruckner: Symphony No.0 "The Prequellian"....

Works OK yeah? But now, what do we call the actual No.1.....

Hmm... I want something catchier, with a significant arrival on the scene implied....like Nielsen 1, there's a feeling of self-announcement about the Bruckner 1st...

Bruckner Symphony No.1: A Man in Full.

Come on, how about a new name for the highly pictorial Mahler 1....

This thread could be a better game than the free-cryptic-associative ones...

When, many years ago, I was pregnant and unwisely attended concerts with darling baby seemingly squeezing my bladder out of boredom, there was a Bruckner symphony that I named 'The Interminable,' or 'The Never-Ending'.

Ahem, the two together are entitled 'The Railway Modeller's Special'.

And no, I'm not believing AB was a railway enthusiast!

PS I've suddenly realised Karajan must have been an 00 gauge (4mm/ft) and 0 gauge (7mm/ft) railway modeller. Why else would he have coupled (good word!) 4 and 7 in his HMV set SLS811, my own intro to Bruckner???

                            As was Honegger: Pacific 231!

It was indeed. I was referring to the BBC April Fool that told us that the noise of locos in the Alps was a strong musical inspiration to AB, which seemed very plausible. It wasn't so long ago, on these boards, that I learnt it was utter fiction. Some illusions are best left uncorrected!
