Oh I'd miss Xmas without my bit of Vaughan Williams. In fact I'd miss every time of year.

I listened to the Pastoral and Flos Campi and think I shall now wave the box goodbye without a tear. For some time it's been getting increasingly difficult to listen to the mid to late 19th century and the 'mainstream' 20th. Something missing for me
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Different countries have synchronising holidays. The US has Thanksgiving, and China has a National Day. We have a few in the UK - but Christmas is the "biggest". Now I find all the hype and build up - often it seems for purely commercial reasons - just too much to take. It's just a day, like any other, after all - IMO. Yes - I do like some aspects of Christmas - but the overblown nature of some of the thoughts and actions around it have finally got to me again this year. Ah well - that's just me perhaps.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Won't happen this year of course but we usually celebrate New Year (Silvester) with my wife's cousin in Cologne who likes to throw a biggish party. At midnight a huge amount of fireworks go off all over the place. I have been known to organise an Auld Lang Syne at 1 am for British New Year - and Portuguese.

You are under no compulsion to take any part in it if you don't want to. As I pointed out earlier, it's much easier on the blood pressure and stress levels if you employ a bit of selectiveness and simply partake of those aspects of Christmas you do enjoy and ignore the rest. Once you strike the right balance for yourself it's surprising how much more pleasure you get out of Christmas.
