Music that sets you up for the day

Petroc (or his producer) decided to end this morning's 'Breakfast' with the final movement of Sibelius's 5th symphony, which is one of those pieces that never fails to set me up for the day, ready to face whatever is lying in wait.

I usually stick R3 on in the morning after breakfast - usually from 7:50-ish for as long as there's something listenable on (or if it's not good from the start then I switch off). Other than that I tend not to enjoy music until after I've had a shower and practiced guitar for a bit, for some reason.

Silence works well for me at the start of the day!

If I have to drive in to work then that is usually the first music I listen to - and I do tend to tailor my choices to the length of journey.

Vivaldi is pretty ubiquitous on AM Classical Radio for a reason. All those bouncy Venetian syncopations do make the blood start flowing.

Anything uplifting - Poulenc Sextet? Bartok second p concerto? - certainly not Sibelius 5 though... having to wait for those last chords to play out before I can proceed with the day... Get on with it, Sibby!!!

Coronation Scot, Puffin' Billy and a whole slew of light music that takes me back to early mornings in the fifties, sadly light music doesn't much figure in R3 playlists these days.

Presently - Violin Sonatas (Bach, Mozart, LvB etc) or Gesualdo Tenebrae...all very sotto voce.....wind in the trees or birdsong is fine too........ I began some Bach Cantatas recently but soon went back to earlier choral trads.......their sombriety and quietude.. .. Josquin perfect too..

A Haydn symphony never fails to cheer first thing in the morning.

The same goes for just about anything by Mozart.

That was more Radio 2/Light Programme material - Max Jaffa and and the Spa Orchestra, or Reginald Leopold on Grand Hotel.

As far as I recall neither the sainted Max nor Reggie Leopold ever played them, they were smaller-scale ensembles. It was more the repertoire of the then equivalent of the BBC Concert Orchestra. You may well be correct re the Light prog. but less likely that R2 than R3 would play it now. Its tuneful orchestral music, bright and upbeat and didn't R3 have a Light Music weekend a few years ago?.

                          Start the day with Haydn.
I used to do this on the drive to work and I've carried it on now I've retired

I've been told that there was also a Palm Court Orchestra on what was then called the BBC Light Programme, also a programme called Semprini Serenade.
Haydn is definitely a good start to the day!

Semprini Serenade was still going in the 1970s, Wednesday nights on R2 IIRC.
