    CD surprise

Thinking of the uncovering of the Joyce Hatto scandal: last night, for the first time, I played the first CD from my Marriage of Figaro set on my laptop, via an external CD Drive and was astonished to discover that for years I had NOT been listening to the Abbado, VPO: Bo Skovhus, Lucio Gallo, Sylvia McNair, Cecilia Bartoli, Cheryl Studer, a recording to which I have become extremely fond in the face of less than enthusiastic critics.

Not at all: The CD drive told me this was Terfyl, Hagley, John Eliot Gardner (Baroque Soloists). This recording is on YouTube so I listened and - as you were: my recording is certainly not Terfyl, Hagley and JEG. However, that one is on Archiv and mine on Deutsche Grammophon, both apparently recorded in 1994.

    Does this misattribution happen often?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes. I often play CDs via my laptop these days and about 1 in 5 will show the correct work(s) but a different performance. I assume that sometimes the same track numbering is used (Chopin 24 etudes are almost always going to be presented via 24 tracks) and so there is a lazy detection via WMP or whatever is used to play it. I can't believe that incorrect details are programmed into the discs themselves.

I think that what the system tells you does not always match up whats on your CD - when I have been ripping CDs to laptop Windows Media Player what has come up hasn’t always been the CD I was ripping.

Well, I did just wonder, thinking of the Joyce Hatto scam being given away by the CD information. I wonder whether it was usually the CD info that correct and the packaging wrong. I was given a choice between choosing the Terfel/Hagley version or something in Japanese or Chinese (perhaps that was correct).

Some CDs also have all the correct track information correct and others have no information at all.

克勞迪奧·阿巴多 和維也納愛樂樂團 is allegedly Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharnonic

I copied the Chinese from the same source! I don't know that it was on the disc. CD2 has the correct performers. I should have felt quite unsettled to have been labouring under a misapprehension all these years.

                It would certainly stump me!
I'm sure that ff has used her usual precision, but 'should', as in 'ought to have done (but didn't)’?
I think that 'would' would have been the word that I would have used in that sentence.

Duolingo is constantly correcting my 'I shalls' and 'I shoulds' to wills and woulds. I gather it is a mark of an older generation.

Google Translate agrees with you: "J'aurais dû me sentir assez instable d'avoir travaillé sous un malentendu toutes ces années." All this toiling makes me feel quite unstable.

Time for some camomile tea and a little lie down then, I reckon.

From Modern Certificate French 1965 " to provide material ....of a standard suitable for less able classes preparing for O level."
Nicole: But I didn't know you were going to come to the house this evening! If I had known I should have not gone out.
Gerard: I told you on Monday that I should come on Wednesday.
Nicole: I must have forgotten. If I had known that you would be here I should have refused.
Gerard: You would have refused what?
Nicole: I should have refused to go out with Georges.

Back in the day I could probably have translated that pretty well but even then I think I might have been a bit puzzled by the English used. The book is full of little gems and, I think was rather old-fashioned even then; maids were not commonplace in the 60s...
