It's a matter of one's own judgement whether the 'clues' are so obscure and contrived that the game will be slowed down. Subjectively, one may feel they are possible to decrypt because one knows the answers. But objectively, how possible are they to be unravelled by others within an acceptable length of time?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Can't we just take this thread as an opportunity to employ our own knowledge, ingenuity and whimsy to the last 'correct' answer, and admire the same qualities in others?

After all, there are no prizes and indeed no winners!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

You might be right, but I still won't be playing any more.
For me, the wit and (dare I say) type of cleverness I like of taking letters from one answer and working then into the next one, or having a connection such as Ravel's barque sur l'ocean becoming Sinbad's ship and the sea, has gone when so much decryption is needed, regardless of the ingenuity and whimsy involved.
