Though I guess not many out and out fans of his on the forum he was a comedian who rarely caused offence and was a good TV show host. As a singer - his chart hits in the late 60s did nothing for me - there was so much other folk and prog rock and everything to occupy my musical mind - but he had a good voice and could deliver a standard well if not in the class of Bennett, Sinatra, Monro or Cole. One of these guys, cloughie, that nobody except Eric, of course) had a bad word to say about. Always seemed like a genuinely nice guy. And my Mum liked him, so that was a good endorsement for me.

I once met him backstage at the Liverpool Phil. It was a Buddy Holly concert and I was looking for my seat. He kindly asked if he could help me.
