Can I assume that parkruns have the advantage of a loop circuit - which I mentioned earlier. On the one hand a circuit track might get boring - but presumably one only has to go round a few times.

Yet another factor might be slopes. Where I live currently there are several options for "lone" walking or running. Some are up or down steep gradients - I walk them sometimes. Downhill is perhaps worse than going up - it would be quite easy to fall over I think if run down at speed. Otherwise there are flat walks - but no chance of a loop - so one has to set a distance - go there and then come back. Finally for the really fit - there are loops if one is prepared to run or walk maybe 10 miles (or more) including the difficult uphill/downill sections.

To respond to gradus - perhaps parkruns do have (for some people) the advantage of not being in one's immediate neighbourhood - where one might get comments such as "Oh - it's that **** guy out again", and at least there would be an assumption that a group of people are not all bonkers! Or maybe that they all are - but "who cares?".

Another factor might actually be meeting people - new people with different interests - apart from walking or running. For me the disadvantage apart from having to get up early (!!) would be the approx 20 mile drive to the nearest parkrun - not good for the environment - but for those near a park with suitable routes for running/walking could be enjoyable.
There's lots about Parkrun on the attached link, Dave:

Tomorrow is the Great North Run. Anyone in the Tyneside area might look out for runner number 34648, who is hoping his position will be a lower number than that.

I don’t expect to be interviewed by the TV crew, as I won’t be wearing a daft costume and definitely don’t want to be called a “fun runner” (a term only only used by TV commentators who’ve never run).

Good on you, Eine. Enjoy the day - hope the weather is favourable and you get, and have, a good time.

Good luck EA, hope you have a great run.

I did a trail half marathon last saturday, certainly the toughest run I have ever done, but not been too creaky in the days since ! I really like trail runs, and the varied challenges they bring.
Anecdotal evidence points to low entry numbers in some of the less high profile running events in the last few months, in part surely due to belt tightening, which is disappointing but understandable.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

Trail runs are indeed more challenging than road runs, though they are more interesting. My favourite parkruns are of the rougher kind. I particularly like Dalby Forest.

Let’s say over 28,000 runners crossed the line before I did.

The main thing is did you enjoy your day? - I did the GNR a few times back in the 90s and the atmosphere and crowds lining much of the route was superb. Did you manage a PB?

You finished, and presumably in one piece so well done, not least because given how many took part there must have been a good few who crossed the line after you.

Sounds like a good few finished after you, Eine. Congrats.

Definitely not. My PB for a half-marathons is 1:25:26. Yesterday I was well over an hour slower than that.

The organisation of the events was quite superb. Even after the race, when exhausted runners were walking to South Shields Metro Station, there were small water stations to help dehydrated participants on their way.

                                Well done EA, great effort.

( A PB of 1.25 is amazing…….mins is about 1.56, though I have only done three, but I don’t expect to get much faster …..) so

Be interested to know what the course was like.

Next event for me is a 10k trail run from Salisbury Racecourse on October 9th, all being well.
Should be lovely scenery, but might be a bit of an uphill finish, as the racecourse is on top of a hill . There won’t be 60 k participants , for sure .
