Useful tips & hints (household & otherwise)

Can’t find another thread for this sort of thing....

Prompted by a magically useful tip I employed the other day (picked up from the internet).

A glass of whisky placed on a polished dark wood table must have had slight spillage round the bottom, and left a very annoying white ring.

    Solution: toothpaste!

A small amount on kitchen paper and smeared into the ring and immediate surrounding area... and the ring has completely disappeared, with no apparent damage to the polish and finish.

    Seems like magic to me...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

          Fixes dents, too.
Anyway, aren’t there portuguese ladies to deal with this stuff?

There was a wonderful series of "shorts", tagged on after the ends of main programmes on TV, suggesting invaluable tips on matters that would otherwise probably stay undivulged outside particular trade practices: how to fillet and skin a Dover Sole being the one that comes to mind. Simple practical solutions one would not otherwise think of. It would be so nice if it were re-introduced as a regular slot on one of the main channels.

Toothpaste also works on scratched watch glass. Not so many people wear watches these days....

The cut surface of a brazil nut can work well to minimise the look of small scratches in darker or stained wood. I used it on a couple of occasions to deal with the damage to chairs from studs in jeans.

Toothpaste has also been recommended for scratches on CDs and DVDs. I've tried it, and also Brasso and Silvo, but not Brillo pads!

Another one is the use of nail varnish remover for drops of super-glue spilt on table tops. I don't know if it really works - but I had that problem. Over time and some use problems sometimes just go away, or become insignificant. Super glue can be really useful, but best to cover all surfaces nearby with protective sheets - newspaper, plastic etc. It's just so easy to accidentally drop a small amount where it's not wanted. I guess the tip there is to think ahead, and try to avoid the problem - it can save time in the long run.

....yes, people have been telling the govt so for ages....they've been dropping small amounts, and often large amounts since 2010....

Talking about dents: soaking really stained tea mugs/teaspoons in denture cleaning solution is amazingly good at cleaning off those stains.
