    A great deal from Apple.

Sometimes I fancy new equipment, and sometimes I hear about new things I'd like to check out. I made a mistake today (don't I always ...) and thought I'd read about a 16 inch ipad Pro - but in fact it was a MacBook Pro. The article I read was about how taping over the camera could lead to damage with the newest models of that laptop, due to the very thin nature of the screen at that point.

I thought I'd look at the pricing and specs. Indeed the specs look quite decent - the pricing less so, with prices in pounds which are as typical pretty much the same in pounds as in dollars. The current pound to dollar rate is about 1 dollar = 80p, so UK prices are bumped up 25%.

What "tickled" me was the notion of getting cashback, or scrappage money for my current MacBook Pro, which dates from 2013. I duly filled in the model number, and said that it was generally in good condition, and was then informed that I might get around £75 back for handing it in. Absolutely not a good deal, since it in many ways works rather well - I'm typing on it now. Even if I did buy a new machine, there's no way I'd hand a reasonable working machine in for such a low value.

Reminds me of my bicycle story. I once bought a second hand bicycle from a dealer - didn't charge a lot, and it was OK. I think it cost me £10. It wasn't a fancy bike, but fairly solid. The dealer told me what a good soiid and trusty bike it was. A year later I took it back to the dealer, and it was still working and in a similar condition to before. He then told me there was no demand and it was a rubbish bike anyway, and I think he offered me £3. OK - he had to make a living, but that's how it's done.

I can't remember now whether I took his deal, or gave it away. Generally for such poor deals I'd rather give something away, or keep as a spare.

I have a MacBook Pro of a similar age to yours, Dave, on which I'm typing this. I've been considering updating my computers soon (I also have an iMac bought in 2012) but I thought I'd have the MacBook refurbished rather than buy a new one. I'm sure you'd get a lot more than £75 for yours if you were to sell it on.
