What new things or services have you discovered during lockdown?

This lockdown period - which is still going on where I live - has presented some new opportunities, while of course at the same time also creating significant problems for many people.

We have discovered some interesting services and new ways of interacting.

Most of us in these boards have perhaps discovered streaming services, for example Glyndebourne, Royal Opera, Berlin PO, RSNO, the MET, Chichester theatre etc., which have been put on to try to maintain an audience. Some of us have also discoved Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Whatsapp etc.

A couple that others may not have discovered are:

The Frick Collection - Cocktails with a Curator. This is a very good series, and I know of people who have spent a considerable amount by buying in alcohol to make the cocktails.

Denman College - lectures and courses. These are mostly Zoom based sessions at specific times, and include cooking, history etc. Initially these were provided I thnk free via Facebook, but then there was realisation that there was a lot of interest, so they are provided mostly for £5 a session. It seems that the college has discovered a new market, as now some of the sessions have over 200 participants, which is far more than would have been possible for face to face meetings which might have been charged at prices between £10 and £50, for example. I hope that some of those sessions will continue after lockdown has been completely abandoned everywhere in the UK.

So, have you discovered any new things or services you didn't know of before, or indeed, have you started such a service or new activity?

As I mentioned on another thread I've been uploading to Soundcloud some new binaural mixes of multichannel electronic pieces (using the free Ambeo plugin from Sennheiser which I hereby recommend) and to Youtube an entire concert from my studio, and currently I'm working on a piece for some young musicians in Boston which will involve me sending out individual parts to each of them which they'll record individually, after which I'll take the recordings and compose them into another "electronic" piece (which will eventually be combined with the same performers playing live, once the pandemic is over, assuming anyone in the USA actually survives). I'm trying to turn the situation to some creative purpose by doing things I wouldn't normally think of or get around to doing, seeing it not as a restriction but as an opportunity to think differently.

Apart from that I've been doing some exercise classes, my OH has had a masterclass on baroque harp with Andrew Lawrence-King, my academic superiors have (I hope) realised that faculty meetings will never again have to take place with everyone in the same room (or even country), I gave a lecture in Istanbul without leaving my desk (although under normal circumstances I would prefer to have gone there). I've been watching more concerts on video than usual. Returning to exercise, the first time I was out and about after lockdown I sprained my ankle. That will teach me not to leave the house unnecessarily in future.

Is it the Ambeo Orbit plugin to which you are referring? Just want to make sure I look for the right thing. It's got to be better than the Zoom Ambisonic Player's binaural converter.

Yes it is. It isn't perfect by any means - front-back separation isn't hugely convincing and the vertical dimension is largely wishful thinking - but it does produce a much more convincing result with multichannel material than does a conventional kind of stereo mixdown.

What a pain all these virtual events and repeats are (after over 65 years I’ve stopped listening to The Archers!). The positives how good our village shop, local delivery services and click and collect are.

how good our village shop [is]
Ours has been absolutely amazing, especially for the older members of our community whom they have helped. The couple who run it are saints, and if they've made a bob or two extra recently, they jolly well deserve it.

Ditto, the nearest community shop is outstandingly good, managing to help those in need whilst carrying an extraordinarily wide range of products.
