Likewise, I find the member departure to be a disproporationate response in the circumstances.

Those of us, a diminishing number now I'm afraid, who were on the old BBC Forum will know all about rancour and this place is a haven of peace and respectability compared to the often highly unpleasant 'debate' that used to go on there, some of which was extremely nasty.
Hostly intervention is done with a very light touch here but it does demand a certain discretion and foresight to know when a thread either has the potential to wander off in the wrong direction or a poster is moving off limits. The afore-mentioned F-word thread is a case in point. It had little to do with Radio 3 and seemed to me to almost be a deliberate set up. For the poster who started it to then leave the Forum due, in part, to 'bad language' seems a bit rich."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

What threads have bad language in them? Obviously ones I don’t follow! This is a great pity and a warning to other members who are responsible for these posts. Very sorry to hear. Those people should be wRned or blocked from here,Don’t cry for me

Experience in another forum - related to a particular (non musical) interest shows that they can develop into an anodyne bubble. Brexit and somewhat right centred, those who disagreed left in various stages over time. Too little respect was given to different views and the effort in posting made no real change to the debate, or influence on it. Now, there are few active posters and they talk to each other, sporadically, about their own outlook and tastes..... from a disposition of complete agreement.
I decided after a quick look that the lyrics thread wouldn't reward the time spent, so I only looked once but didn't take offence. If members have contributed to that thread, its not really fair to make it one "that formerly existed" unless the posts have really crossed the line. As I wasn't reading the thread, was it one of those "late night" batch of sentiments unwisely posted?
Its a delicate balancing act, but in general the debate here is positive (and its possible to mentally scoot over/blank out the posts of those whose contributions remorselessly grate) so I agree we shouldn't censor by being offended, whilst at the same time we would agree there is a line not to be crossed.
I also appreciated that for moderators they are giving up their time editing or managing the board so that isn't to be overlooked either.
Whilst I agree LMcD should not be persuaded about his membership, I also regret his exit - as I have others, and it would be a good thing to have his positive posts should he return.

I'd just add my sorrow that you've decided to leave, LMcD. Over the years I've been a 'Host', the Forum has become far less disputatious (sounds like a Ken Dodd word) than it used to be. There used to be a lot of contributors who couldn't tell the difference between an argument (logical discussion of opposing views) and an argument (flaming row). Not so now, and far less personal insults thrown around.
Agree wholeheartedly with:it would be a good thing to have his positive posts should he return.

The multiplicity of topics on here can be a negative when trying to find something, or a suitable place for a contribution, but it also means that it is relatively easy to avoid sections that cause offence, although it is admittedly tiresome when something one had been, and wishes to continue, following gets to that point, but it is usually relatively shortlived one way or the other.
I enjoyed LMcD's posts and hope that eventually a return may be possible.

I don't understand why LMcD felt it was adequate reason to leave. While not perfect there cannot be many other generally polite and erudite music-based message boards around. Certainly we do not have the vituperation found on Twitter or Facebook.
Please reconsider LMcD, your views are valued.

After the censorship of all my posts (two Prince, one Joni Mitchell, only one of them sexually explicit) on the now restored Memorable Lyrics Thread, you might be singing Missing You to me soon....
My head says leave, my music-loving-music-sharing heart says.....
Like Dusty, I just don't know what to do with myself....
Might as well get the champagne out for the return of Grand Prix... there is a certain Art to Suffering Nobly for the cause of Free Speech......
