    Goodbyee ....

I'd like to thank those Forumistas who've accepted my generally light-hearted approach to things and taught me so much over the past 34 months. Sadly, the relentless increase in rancour, bad language and indeed, in some cases, what I would categorize as bad taste has proved too much of late, so I'm bowing out - more in sorrow than in anger.

I very much hope our friend LMcD will return to the fold

But he makes a valid point in mentioning the rancour and bad language. There’s no place for either on this forum. We can disagree with others without making personal attacks. As for bad language, it serves no purpose other that to relieve the frustration of the writer, but if reported, the messaged will almost certainly be removed by the hosts, along with any messages that quote the offending words.
Further violations could result in “pre-mod” of posts, or suspension. In extreme cases, individuals have been banned permanently from the forum.
If forumists act reasonably, discussions can be rewarding for all. If you think House Rules are being broken, or posters are being unreasonable, please report the offending post and the Hosts will investigate.

Why has the thread on "Memorable Lyrics" been invalidated?

OK - so some of the "language" in my posts there was sexually explicit, but a part of those very lyrics, an essential part of great songs & albums which meant a lot to me and others.......
Prince's "Darling Nikki" and "I would die 4 U" were remarkable for 1984, years ahead of their time in gender role & stereotype... so why the censorship?

Anyone has the right to object to sexually explicit expression, but this should be discussed openly, not suppressed.

We need a specification of "bad language" in the current & related contexts....sexually explicit language cannot be defined as "bad" inherently.

            Yep, I agree with Jayne.

I admit, I thought LMcD was joking when he said over on the deleted thread that he was going to go. I'm afraid I find it a little hard to fathom why the lyrics Jayne posted would be so offensive. I still find it hard to fathom.

Also, it's irritating that the person who is offended gets their way above and over all the many people who didn't complain. We are not children on this forum... so this censorship is somewhat ridiculous.

I agree. The language and context did surprise me, but it was hardly describing a perversion. The matter could have been discussed first.

I don't understand why LMcD felt it was adequate reason to leave. While not perfect there cannot be many other generally polite and erudite music-based message boards around. Certainly we do not have the vituperation found on Twitter or Facebook.

Please reconsider LMcD, your views are valued.

                    I too hope you'll reconsider.
                    You'll be missed.

I took some time time out recently, partly to try to quell my 'addiction' to my devices in lockdown, but partly too as certain threads were either annoying me or making me more anxious (or both!), but having returned I'm now just ignoring those threads or shrugging off some of the comments.
I hope you find that you can do the same.

                    Best wishes

It does seem a little exaggerated to leave the forum because someone posts a lyric one doesn't like. As for rancour, as a recent returnee, albeit rather tentative, I have the impression that this is a more friendly place now than at some times in the past. Maybe I'm not seeing the offending threads. Well, if someone wants to leave that's up to them, but subsequently to censor the thread about song lyrics is surely a bit weird.

I suspect that people, in the end, do get a bit tired of messageboarding and feel it's taking up too much time which could be better used. Not for others to question the reasons why someone chooses to leave. I looked once at the memorable lyrics (if that was the problem) and decided it was all bilge and looked no more. I did consider posting John Skelton's Woefully array'd (to "tune" by W Cornysh) but knew it would attract no more interest than what I'm reading now, so saved my energy. But LMcD seemed a decent chap, so i think he'll be missed.

I do think that lockdown is affecting some people's minds here, though I don't refer to LMcD.

According to The Cambridge Dictionary, the meaning of generalization is a written or spoken statement in which you say or write that something is true all of the time when it is only true some of the time. Making generalizations can be dangerous, but using generalizations phrases in essays or in conversation.... can be really useful.
