I'm posting this message simply in order to make clear that I'm not leaving simply because somebody posted what I regarded as distasteful explicit sexual lyrics in what had up until then been an enjoyable and informative thread, although I'll happily confess to being old-fashioned enough to not enjoy reading on a public forum such graphic descriptions of what should, in the opinion of many people, a matter for private correspondence and discussion.
There have also been an increasing number of nasty attacks, not only on public figures but also on fellow Forumistas. I'm afraid that I don't find messages expressing the hope that certain people will die in the best of taste. In order to avoid such unpleasantness, I have to avoid reading any messages posted by the people concerned, thereby possibly also missing more interesting and reasonable postings dealing with subjects in which I am interested.
I would have thought - or hoped, possibly foolishly - that most people would have realized that a thread entitled 'Use and abuse of the F-word' had been started by somebody who disapproved of the frequency with which it is used by some members.

          and again ?

There's a lot of self indulgent nonsense going on IMV

As an adult I don't choose to engage with those who are enthusiasts for violent horror films BUT I don't think I have to tell them why not

Some things aren't suitable for some people.... Oratorios make my blood pressure dangerous while Japanese Noise Music calms me down

So you start a "discussion" about something but really what you really want are people to join your disgusted of Tonbridge Wells club ?

So - if we didn't know already - we can really get your goat with the phrase "DoG, DoG, DoG"!

LMcD I do hope you will reconsider. You were very welcoming to me when I joined last year.

It has been said that there is little animosity and confrontation here compared to other forums but again, as someone has said, that is because people here all tend to think the same: read the Guardian and hate Tories, Trump and Brexit. Those are valid points of view but as someone who voted Conservative and Leave and who reads the Telegraph and the Times I have sometimes felt as though I have stumbled into the wrong place. And so I have considered leaving myself: not because I cannot respect different views (I can) but because of the disdain shown to people who think as I do. Somebody here mentioned that the racists and homophobes left a while ago. I am neither but I resent the assumption that anyone who is not a leftie is so inclined.

I remember the old BBC Radio 3 message board and the R3OK forum that grew out of it and I was hoping to find something similar here. R3OK degenerated into the six letter word game between two people before giving up the ghost, which was a shame, but I do not remember so much politics there as there is here.

When have you been characterised on this forum as one of the stereotypes you list in the above? I've enjoyed your posts and politically wouldn't have known you from Adam. As for me, I don't think the same ways as many on this forum, but I enjoy the to-ing and fro-ing of contrasting arguments and tend to gravitate towards those most articulately presented, on occasion having my own views challenged. The latter must surely be a good thing, or we ossify? Political thinking, here as elsewhere, has too long been dominated by orthodoxy and stale thinking, and everyone can now see where it's got us all. This is a good place to be.

A friend has drawn my attention to the fact that I can ignore posts from certain people - an option of which, being technologically illiterate, I was previously unaware. Odd that nobody's mentioned it here, but it would certainly remove the major source of my irritation.
