Phil May, lead singer of the Pretty Things has died. I remember an article in the Sunday Times colour mag in 1964 where they were portrayed as a group, uglier and even more scruffy than the Stones. Interestingly Dick Taylor was an early guitarist in the Stones. The band’s early singles ‘Rosalyn’ and ‘Don’t bring me down’ had a raw, bluesy edge to them and early albums included songs of the blues greats such as Bo Diddley - indeed their name came from one of his songs. Phil moved the band in a prog direction with Parachute and Private F S Sorrow. Later in his career he went back to the blues, reforming the Pretty Things and later joining members of the Yardbirds.
