    Notifications

Does anyone else find the concept of Notifications tantalisingly useless - particularly - but not exclusively - in MacOS?

    No
    I find them useful
Don't have them switched on for everything but for some things on one of my machines

It helps if one figures out how to use these on Macos. Then it helps if one can actually access the items flagged up.

However, I did find this - https://www.newscientist.com/article...dont-know-yet/ though the article I wanted to find - about Patient Zero - now appears to be behind a paywall - a slight problem, which I expect I can solve via the library services.

I'm not sure whether I'll really find the Notifications useful, or simply irritating. What I do find particularly annoying is if something catches my eye, and then I can't find the article referred to. Perhaps if that's going to happen I'd rather not know.

I'm revisiting this, as I think I just saw something which I wasn't expecting, and which might (just might) enhance my understanding.

I found in one application/web site that there's a list of notifications - so I can track who said what etc. Is this generally the way these things work - that notifications go to a specific application, or website, or web community, or are there other mechanisms at play? One reason why I have disliked, or not found notifications useful, is that it's all very well being notified that "X has done Y", or "A has said x", but without being able to track down where the actual messages are stored this is useless. I can see that for some websites or applications that notifications, if they are accessible, can be useful. On the other hand, there is still also the possibility that there'll be so many notifications about or from a particular person or group that they will be as useful as SPAM!

(At least one can eat SPAM - though - if one chooses ...)

I still find notifications mostly a nuisance, and a bit pointless, but I wonder if just occasionally they can have a use - which may depend on a site issuing notifications.

For example, on this site - is it possible to receive a notification if there is a reply to a particular post on a thread? That's an option on some sites.

For people who visit rarely, and have very specific queries, such a feature could be very useful.

An alert when one of your posts has been quoted would be a handy thing too: I'm sure I've missed some replies/responses in the past.
But that would be asking a lot.

There are sites which do that.

One reason I find notifications pointless is that so many sites ask for "permission" to send them, and then one gets absolutely inundated with "information" - 99.9% of which is either not wanted or useless ("notification spam", perhaps), but unfortunately the 0.1% which one might really want to have goes missing or swamped.
