It took a team of 50 people to carefully hoist the animal out, upside down.

Elephant rescued from deep well in a 14-hour operation

A team of 50 people have helped rescue a male elephant from a deep well in Dharmapuri, southern India.
Local villagers dropped banana leaves down for the elephant to eat as the rescue dragged on through the night.
The bull was eventually brought to the surface upside down, as cranes and belts lifted it to safety.
Fewer Smart things. More smart people.

Loved this about the Pooley Bridge.....esepcially the bit about....poohsticks .... Proving that human beings are capable of great things if they try.....a sense of perspective and a sense of fun! Life, the Universe and, y'know, everything....

It spanned the River Eamont for over 250 years, then Storm Desmond swept it away. Now Pooley Bridge has been rebuilt – and a local delicacy must be updated

But what a beautiful thing the bridge is... with lovely writing to match by Oliver Wainwright...
And in the end its all about.....biscuits.
      Which rhymes with ....

Just reported on BBC2, the GSA has opened the way to the Biden/Harris transition.

I agree. It was a few minutes of pleasure reading that and admiring the bridge. Shows what can be achieved and all too rarely is. I have a suspicion also that this beautiful solution was no more expensive(and possibly cheaper) than a utilitarian UK PLC 'that'll do' job. The biscuit makers may have to settle for an imprinted image on a rectangular base though - the single span design doesn't lend itself to something that would stand up to handling...

Wiskets (aka 'swill baskets'), of course!

The old bridge was always at risk. It's
Nice to see the tea-room's biscuits
Back once more for pm tea,
One for you and eight for me.

The Pooley New Bridge was designed
                Most Conscientiously
                To accommodate
                The continued playing of
                The Poohsticks

                After vigorous play
                We repair to
                Grannys Tearooms
                For our Tea and
                Biscuits

                  a bridge swept away
                  people are separated
                  a tea-room closes

                  across the water
                  a slender span leaps anew
                  the tea-room opens

Shades of the Teahouse of the August Moon?. Better amend tea-room to teahouse. On the old BBC board we had a 'limeraiku' thread, but I've forgotten what the rules were. Perhaps 5,7,5,7,5 syllables with the limerick rhyme scheme? I think it petered out quite quickly.

Good news yesterday was that Joe Biden has picked Antony Blinken, to be his Secretary of State. As well as the fact that he is a cultivated internationalist, see what happens when you keep repeating A Blinken A Blinken A Blinken. I wonder if his parents thought of that?

I hear that Trump has invited him to the theatre.

According to the Steve Colbert show, A Blinken has a rock band.

I believe I indeed heard it from M. Colbair. I couldn't remember whether 'twas he or Mr Iadorola on The Damage Report
