New Zealand to lose its live classical music station

RNZ Concert is to be scrapped and replaced by an automated service on medium wave (!) and digital, aimed at 18- to 35-year-olds. This is part of a range of deep cuts in public service radio in New Zealand. (I did wonder whether to post this message, as it might be read by one of the unholy alliance currently taking aim at the BBC, but I guess they'd probably find out anyway).

Perhaps they should have followed the lead of the Library service and had the station staffed by classical music savvy volunteers!

I heard about this from a New Zealand friend who says the education system has failed in making young people aware of classical music.

Not so different here, though there are still many who try to make a difference.

I am really disappointed by this move. They have an evening concert series called Music Alive which brought superb concert music from around the world into my hotel room or car as I travelled. Dumbing down is even more apparent down here as we migrate to idiotic talk shows and vacuous reality shows.
NZ is an ageing society and the squeal to appeal to a younger audience is at variance with the demographics.
I have R3 to stream whilst at home but in the car or in a hotel room I'm stuck with my iphone or a tinny internet streaming option on the lap top.
We have world class orchestral performances but getting to Auckland or Wellington for me means a flight and a night in a hotel (I have done this on several occasions to hear my passionately loved pieces), but is something I can afford about once every couple of months.
I'm so sad that familiar voices will no longer wake me up or provide a joyous escape from the misery of the news these days.
