The police decline has been going on for years now. About 15 years ago my daughter's very expensive flute was nicked, along with other things, from the back of our car. We went to our local police station (which has now been shut down, of course) and reported the theft. When asked what they were going to do about it, the PC sighed and pointed to a pile of paperwork saying there was 'no hope' of any investigation.

Petrushka, you have my sympathy. Where I used to live and sounds very similar to your location, we also had a similar problem. No interest from Council, Police etc. WE did have a very strong community spirit and we sorted the problem out for ourselves. Many (although probably the many never having suffered what you or we have) will 'tut tut'. But our solution was to wait ...with a rope lying across the road. They went elsewhere. Sorry any snowflakes but sometimes you have to dig your heels in. And yes, they could have been killed/maimed/blah/blah/blah but after three months of it and getting zero help from those who should, we'd had enough.Fewer Smart things. More smart people.
