Gift for a budding flautist

Delighted to say that the 11-year old daughter of a dear friend of mine has been awarded a musical scholarship in the face of strong competition. I'd like to send her some CD's featuring the flute but guess that she has most of them already.

Can anyone please suggest some CDs for flute music that is challenging/invigorating/stimulating or indeed anything else ?

I’ve been told by a flautist and the Weinberg scholar David Fanning that the Weinberg pieces for flute and piano are very rewarding to play and the Concertos certainly are challenging

Well done - I must look out for that CD myself, or listen online.

I didn't reply, but I think the Rodrigo concerto might be worth study, probably more so than the Arnold concertos which were mentioned.

For a much less contemporary concerto I have always liked the Telemann Concerto for Recorder and Flute in E Minor, TWV 52 - and it's not trivial to play that - on either instrument I think. I have several recordings including one with these performers - Thea von Sparr, Burghard Schaeffer, Wolfgang Meyer, Kammerorchester Emil Seiler - which I've enjoyed immensely over the years, though there are other good versions.

Atarah Ben-Tovim has always impressed me with her enthusiasm and energy since my youth in Liverpool onwards. She is still going strong at 80.

She is an ambassador for Flutewise who run courses for children. If the friend's daughter is local she might prefer this to CDs

Lots of repertoire out there for the flute of course, but the Sonata for Flute and Piano Op 120 by York Bowen is a cracker, and maybe not generally well-known.

Lovely, lively recent Flute Concerto here....but the whole album is wonderfully imaginative, even visionary.....
