Many of us are being tracked ... far more than we thought ..

... and indeed I did think we were being tracked, but this article does suggest the extent of it and the mechanisms currently being deployed are even greater than I was up to now aware of - https://www.vox.com/recode/2019/12/1...h-facebook-ads

    Definitely worth a read.

Whenever I think that 'they' might know everything about me, I fondly recall the email I had from Greater Anglia inviting me to renew my Young Person's Railcard (I was born in 1943).

Meanwhile, 14-year-old LMcD four streets down became worried at the Council Tax demand that Greater Anglia sent him.

When my 90 year old mother had been in a care home for 3 years (in Bridlington), she received a letter from HMRC, telling her they "knew" she had another job in Handsworth, and gave the astronomical overdue tax figure. She had severe dementia, and I had the pleasure of replying to the letter on her behalf. I was very naughty and spun a yarn about her secretly escaping from the care home and driving to the West Midlands and back every day, before admitting it was a wind-up. I then told them (truthfully) that she had passed through Birmingham occasionally on the train when she was a young girl in the 1920s, visiting her grandma in Glastonbury, but had never actually visited the city, or its suburbs.

No apology ever came, though they did back off.

How ironic that the hosting site makes it virtually impossible to find out how to decline their cookies.

Sorry about that, though the cookie business is pretty much out of control now. Thanks for noticing though.

In my case I feel sorry for him - must be like watching the Test Card for 24/7!

And, yes, there are Cookies on this Forum - but we prefer to call them "Biscuits".

You favour the French rather than the Dutch?

In this instance, yes - the same does not apply to orchestras.

When I enter certain places such as Preston Shopping centre and Morrisons etc; sometime later I get a text asking how was my experience of shopping there. I don't ever remember allowing this but I probably have without realising. This could easily be big brother tracking me.

Maybe all this really painful nonsense about agreeing to T&Cs and allowing cookies etc, which slows down access to web sites, has very little to do with the safety and security of our finances, or providing a better user experience, but more to do with tracking us even more precisely. It is a complete pain, though perhaps some of it is helpful, or sensible.

I would recommend duckduckgo.com as a search engine that doesn't track you.

I once had a phone call asking me to 'rate' my visit to the building society earlier that day. It transpired that I had 'consented' to such 'service calls' when opening the account. It took me a little while to convince them that I wished to opt out of this 'service'.
