Stanley Stewart

It's with very great sadness that I have to tell you all that our friend and fellow forumista Stanley Stewart passed away this morning in York hospital. He'd been admitted last Monday with a chest infection and there were various complications including pneumonia. I have spoken with his nephew who said he'd let me know further news and funeral arrangements next week.

I've had the privilege of knowing Stanley for over five years since he joined York Recorded Music Society. He was an enthusiastic member of the society and great company. He will be sorely missed but very fondly remembered.

Oh that is terribly, terribly sad - Stanley's posts and his reports on the YRMS meetings revealed an enthusiastic and humorous personality. I shall miss reading what he had to say. Please pass on my condolences to his family, Gavin.

Saddened to hear this news. I used to hugely enjoy reading Stanley's anecdotes and memories of working with some of the great names of the stage, usually on the occasion they passed away. Alas, his memories didn't appear here in recent months but they were always so full of wit, warmth and humour and were a joy to read.

I corresponded with Stanley about films...he sent me off-TV recordings of two Powell and Pressburger films whose transmission I'd missed (The Red Shoes, I Know Where I'm Going), and a precious recording of Michael Strogoff - he told me how he'd met Anton Walbrook.... Please pass on my condolences too.

Very sad to hear that. I had plenty of good chats with him because he had been an understudy in a stage production my father was in centuries ago and he was full of great background.

I too corresponded with him privately, less than a year ago after I spotted him playing a copper in an early episode of Callan. Very sorry he’s no longer with us, condolences to all close to him.

How very sad to hear. Stanley very kindly sent me a DVD of a Glen Campbell TV broadcast a couple of years ago. RIP Stanley.
