the perils of usury made clear

it does not read to me as if compromise is possible on the sovereign debt, bank capital nexus in Europe .... we might not need a referendum ... this kind of impasse leads to fragmentation and conflict ... mind you taxing forex trading at the current VAT rate would scrape in a few Euro eh ...

... well, I know the M25 can be tiresome sometimes, but surely it's an improvement on what was there before if one needs to get around London??

Those apocalyptic horsemen are riding again:

Costas Lapavitsas: In an open debate the Greek people are unlikely to chose to stay in the euro – something September's protests made clear

I suppose one lesson is that economics is never just about economics, it's also about politics (in fact, mainly about politics).

i find it horrifying that the idea of putting a severe policy to the test of public acceptance is found to be horrifying .... we should suspend politics because the markets do not like it? Papandreuo has given the elites and money men a bit of a poser eh .... hard to question his democratic instinct .....

well a lot happens in three weeks

the Euro is risking a collapse beyond any of our experience or recall, Warner in the Torygraph and Krugman here

as Warner writes, this will always happen more quickly than the politicians realise ...... the market is calliing the EU out over its failure to back its promise with the readies ....

pear shaped won't cover what will be a monstrous financial turbulence ..... and then ....

Although the papers keep saying that the markets are forcing the issue very quickly, it seems to me that we have been in this catastrophic situation for quite a few months now. The position looks hopeless and irretrievable for a number of countries, e.g. Ireland, Portugal (general strike yesterday and in recession), Italy (over 7% to borrow on 10-year bonds), Spain (over 40% youth unemployment) and of course Greece. The austerity policies imposed on these countries haven't a chance of allowing for any growth to be generated. What's surprising is not that there are strikes and people demonstrating on the street, but that this is not much more widespread. Essentially the citizens of these countries are being forced to pay for banking recklessness and the structural failings of the eurozone. Creditor banks are being treated as though they have no responsibility for the failure, and all the burden should be placed on the taxpayer - crazy.

noted aeolium but it looks somewhat different now, the markets are not holding i.e. selling, and not buying any euro assets at all .... as far as Warner and Krugman are concerned that means it is ove,r the Euro that is, done for .... this is in addition to the who owes who and who will pay stuff you refer to ....
