my take is that the UK acted as a counterweight to the two mentioned - I suspect there will be some serious divisions within the EU as the push towards a United States of Europe is pushed too hard.

      .
I'm sure you're right. I'd better make a fresh appointment at Spec Savers.
Should I find myself in possession of one of these celebratory coins, I'll look for a charity collection tin with a suitably sized aperture - I don't think it will fit into the one in our shop. Or should I leave it as a tip on the occasion of my next trip to Wetherspoons?

        Hmmmmm...

I always thought Beethoven's "Fury over a Lost Penny" - a R3 favourite - was a tedious bore but the frothing at the mouth evidenced by those who see the new 50p coin as some kind of coronavirus made solid goes beyond the bounds of childishness into the realms of hysteria.

The laugh is that those doing the most complaining have probably not used cash for months and pay for their Guardian and daily soy latte with a debit card flashed across the terminal at Starbucks. "Cash, dahlings? That's soooo for the plebs."

        Get a life.

I can only apologise to Forumistas whose blood pressure I may have inadvertently raised as a result of introducing a subject which has apparently aroused such seething passions! Like many of the threads which I have the temerity to launch, and indeed a significant proportion of my messages in general, this latest contribution was intended merely to prompt mild amusement and the odd wry comment.

Apology accepted, you very naughty boy. However, it is good to see that we all keep a good sense of humour - which is under no obligation to avoid childishness and hysteria (the great unforgiveable is not having one).

I don't like Peter Rabbit so I always refuse to accept a 50p coin with him on it.

Which it has. Please don't be deterred. So long as there is a leavening of levity I don't think it matters.

Many of us feel we had one, and it's about to be taken away from us.
The coin is adding insult to injury.

                          It's outrageous triumphalism.

Our Plan B is to save them up to buy something deliberately European: French cheese, a bottle of Barolo, or such like.
