I didn't realise he was the one who directed Life of Brian, surely the greatest Python film. 'He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy' is used by our family in many situations.
Very sad day, countless laughs and delight from this great man.
Oh and he once nicked a cab from under my nose on St Martin’s Lane...
“All of a sudden, up he comes... Not so much as a by your leave.”
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I was in a charity shop at one o'clock, and they had Radio 4 on. When the news about Terry Jones was read out, one of the good ladies of the staff said - in a voice that could almost have been a line from a Python show - 'Too much sex and drugs and rock-and-roll, I should think'.
The 75 minute Imagine programme on Monty Python repeated on BBC2 shortly (23.15)
Michael Palin was moving on the news, breaking down in tears remembering the ‘sociable’ Terry Jones ...

TJ was a natural clown imbued with funny bones, often articulated through his strangulated female voice recalling a time when women did speak in a bizarre kind of sing song register, but he was also a terrific technician, I think.
An architect of the Python style as much as one of its humorists and it was what made him a strong director. The Circus sketches were never far off outright zaniness, surreal almost, but it was vital that they were delivered with the straightest of bats. Comedy, as they say, is deadly serious and Life of Brian works so well because of its sheer plausibility. The Three Wise Men turning up at the wrong manger, for example. Well why not? Providing the film with its very zinger ...
'We were led by a star!' / 'Led by a bottle more like'.
I know it was John Cleese who did the 'Latin lesson' sequence in Life of Brian. But I wonder who wrote it? In any case it was so much like my own O-level Latin experiences, it's one of many favourite bits.

I didn't know about the 'Imagine' programme, so thanks for mentioning it. My admiration for Michael Palin is now even greater, if that's possible given how great it was before last night.

Palin's marvellous late 1970s BBC series Ripping Yarns can be obtained on DVD - strongly recommended, one of the best things he's done imv.

Also available on YouTube. I would hate to have to pick a favourite episode, but 'Glorious Gordon' ranks very highly. I think the opening sequence with its comic-book heroes and 'deeds of derring-do' is absolutely brilliant.
