    Amy Winehouse RIP

Tragic death, she could have achieved so much, and could have had an important influence on the music scene and singing styles.

That's a bit of a shock, although I have to say, not unexpected after seeing those clips of her totally out of it in Serbia. I don't know her music at all so cannot say if she could have been an influence on the music scene but she was obviously such a troubled soul and destined for such an end without enormous help and support, which she obviously either didn't get or ignored.

Edit: I don't mean that to sound heartless, it is sad news. Doubly sad that she evidently died alone.

Yes, she had a good and potentially great voice and style.

      Deeply sad.

I don't know any of AW's work but a couple of days ago I happened to be listening to the Radio 4 Front Row devoted to an interview with Tony Bennett and he was saying how he had worked with her and very much admired her.

So very sad whenever this happens. Especially with someone so talented and so (seemingly) lost.

She worked in jazz to begin with, and had one or top British jazzers in her band who were given rein to improvise, I remember, albeit on just one number from the Hackney Empire video, but probably against her career pushers, and dug the interaction, more than suggesting she wanted to keep that link. There are lots of reasonably good female jazz singers; Amy had a natural jazzer's timing and way of dealing with lyrics and inflections that some were almost comparing with Billie Holiday. If any of her friends in that field had managed to coax her away from the commercial end of the biz, under supportive management mentorship she could have followed the Jamie Cullum path and kept herself straight.

                Very, very sad

She did achieve alot; I think; was and is an influence. She was a wonderful guitarist, as I recall.

Back to Black's the only (of the 2 made) albums I'd owned. If you don't know, Mark Ronson is responsible for the production. A dread-ful, Jacobean, funereal song.

Poor bloody girl and her poor bloody folks.

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black with LyricsI do not own this song. This song is owned and licensed by UMG.

I hadn't thought too much about her lyrics - Back to Black's the only (of the 2 made) albums I'd owned. If you don't know, Mark Ronson is responsible for the production. A Jacobean, funereal song.

I believe you're right, SA. Whatever the intended meanings of the title, the recording always brought John Donne to mind for me.

Interesting that we seem to have have a thread bemoaning the self-inflicted death of a crack-addled, over-hyped celeb, (who as far as I'm aware has never appeared on Radio3) , and yet not a note of sympathy on these boards for the 90 or so innocents shot and blown to pieces in Norway at the hands of a gun-wielding lunatic.

Amy Winehouse had a choice. The victims in Oslo and on Utoya island did not.

Indeed - and the irony (or whatever more that that which it may arguably have been) arising from the reader of BBC R4's 22.00 news bulletin (Susan Rae, if my ears do not deceive me) following the report on AW's death immediately with a piece about the 27-year-old Manchester-based nurse who's been arrested over the infected saline drip case was not exactly lost on me...

Of course it's not occurred to you to consider instigating a separate thread on the victims of the two (so far) Norwegian incidents rather than try to screw the topic into this one as you've just done and where it has absolutely no place to be; do you not think that the sympathy that each deserves (such as it is or may be seen to be in each case) ought to be aired in two entirely distinct and separate threads, given that the death of AW and the incidents in Norway are hardly connectable, even by you?
