Must remind myself to signal sarcasm - I too was born 'up north' but the voting patterns would appear to indicate that BJ has tapped into the same class of voters as Trump - there are many in the north that distrust the Tories, after all Thatcher was very willing to allow it to decay as resources were shifted towards London and the City. I assume you are happy with the transport system - any rail link that tries to go east-west runs into the lack of paths across the Oxford Rd to Piccadilly link - I've been on trains from Sheffield to Liverpool that are stuck outside Piccadilly for 10 mins or more - the 2 platforms are grossly overcrowded as are the trains - this was pointed many years ago but the money for upgrading this key link was never available yet billions were spent in London on Thameslink and recently cross-rail. Bus services were also destroyed under Thatcher as competing companies, there for the money and beyond any political control, had no reason to provide a socially necessary service

I was just listening to R4 when John Whittingdale was pointing out that the licence fee was in his opinion unsupportable - do you really consider that any subscription model would result in anything better than a US-style Public Radio version of R3 with begging bowl programs on a daily if not hourly basis

I'm somewhat north of Liverpool but not as far north as Carlisle - the licence fee supposedly applies to the Island but though the BBC has a couple of local reporters the local radio is paid mostly by Government, some subvention from the licence fee + considerable advertising - personally I find most of its output unlistenable to as it is somewhat similar to an amateur version of R2.

Tory Ministers have been kite-flying about various BBC channels (especially Radio 3...oh, I wonder why...) becoming subscription services since at least the 1990s...so this is all very speculative, but they would probably run into fierce opposition....

Poor, shabby, disjointed Public Transport is scarcely exclusive to "the North".....
I don't travel much now, but if I do its always by Taxi. And Thank Goodness for Online Ordering and Home Delivery....

What worries me (and possibly the Beeb’s higher echelons?) is the decline in relevance and objectivity in News.

Mrs. PG simply switch the BBC News off when the 'headlines' are Harry and Meghan. We really fail to see why they are deemed worthy of being more important than Brexit, the mysterious 'Russian' report that the tories are reluctant to release, a Home Secretary who wants to outlaw peaceful protest or the strikes in France.

Channel 4 News is proving to be a better provider of news.

Couldn't agree more. The PRESS / Media are ramping up this whole story to 'goad us into reacting'. FGS..................

Whether Harry and Meghan emigrate to Canada or Pluto makes absolutely no difference to my life. I have nothing against them but it does seem a total non-story.

Assuming you mean the Sussex Saga, it serves to distract attention from another member of the family, unfortunately for H&M.
I gave up on BBC news a long time ago, and TV news in general some time later.
