Anyway - the thought that's cheering me up this morning is that, unless you're in the southern hemisphere or slap bang on the equator, December 22nd is officially the 'shortest' day and that from tomorrow the sun will rise just that little bit earlier and set just that little bit later (even if you can't see it doing so )

Well - it's many public sector workers (incl state school teachers) who are "paid by the year NOT the hour".
In the case of teachers, they don't have to do a day of unpaid work, as the number of days contracted remains the same. They actually get an extra day's holiday.
