    Reasons to be cheerful

'Do you think anybody will really be interested in a thread devoted to good news items and cheerful thoughts?'
    .....
Anyway - the thought that's cheering me up this morning is that, unless you're in the southern hemisphere or slap bang on the equator, December 22nd is officially the 'shortest' day and that from tomorrow the sun will rise just that little bit earlier and set just that little bit later (even if you can't see it doing so )

(Just out of interest - how can a thread have 0 views and 1 reply? )

I've occasionally wondered that too, and can only assume that the counting algorithm has a delay of some sort and only reports back sporadically!

As mentioned on another thread, I'm heading off soon on my first trip south of the Equator, so I suppose that I should be less cheerful as daylight hours will be getting shorter there.

Somehow, I think that the vitamin D boost I expect to get from the sun will compensate.

... a pedant writes : actually, no. The sun continues to rise here a little later until the 28 December - it only begins to rise a little earlier from 4 January. On the brighter side - for the last couple of weeks the sun has been setting progressively later.

Not strictly true - yes the days are longer but for a few days it is darker in the mornings but lighter longer in the evenings.

Make sure you have plenty of high strength sunscreen. The folks I see when I have to go to dermatology clinic often look like they have spent lots of time in the sun with "healthy" tans

Spending time with godson and his young family: they buy sunscreen in industrial quantities, I think!
I've got some factor 50 stuff to take myself, and some Rohan clothing that has a certain amount of UV protection.

My cheerful thought is that Nut Roasts are off the menu this Christmas, and I can look forward to Turkey for Christmas lunch.

The main supermarkets don't stock it (apart from Morrisons - sold out). I spent several hours last Christmas searching for one, and eventually found an expensive item, which unfortunately the ladies couldn't eat, because of dairy additives, I seem to remember.

Can now sit back and relax!

'Yes, but I won the argument'
I shall content myself with the thought that there's more daylight overall and eagerly await the earlier sunrises.

Some other reasons to be cheerful:

Extreme poverty has fallen below 10 per cent of the world’s population for the first time; child mortality has fallen to record low levels; and malaria, polio and heart disease are all in decline. Because Africa and Asia are experiencing faster economic growth than Europe and North America at the moment, global inequality is also falling.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
