As Sir Geoffrey was repeating his point again and again and zzzz ... yesterday, I was reminded that he was complaining the other day that he'd only captained England four times ... "Only four times, mind" .... Can you imagine Geoffrey having to deal with yesterday's situation had he been captain?

There is a darned good reason why Boycott was only entrusted with the captaincy on four occasions. Obviously, he has chosen to forget the circumstances.

Particularly under Mike Brearley. That really was a smoke-and-mirrors era and served England ill for many many years, in my view, focussing as it did on mercurial but flawed characters like Botham. The present set-up is light years away from that in overall and individual excellence, planning and performance - a truly 21st century outfit. It will be interesting to see how they do against South Africa, whenever that series occurs.
