Broad has twisted the game back to something approaching par, depends now on how well England bowl between now and 7pm .... if the Indian batting gets really in it will be a thrashing ....

Strauss just out, again after a spell getting in lost concentration and edges one to the keeper .... now the England side will be examined thoroughly! KP now in ..... nail biting stuff ... Blofers and Tuffers are disarming astute commentators ..
Indian tails up! giving KP a torrid welcome to the crease ..

Blimey! The Saga of Bell's Dismissal, followed by India's good sportsmanship and good sense in re-instating Bell.

                Utterly Butterly Marvellous

Boycott says he's out, tough luck, Aggers says it was against the spirit of the game. I think there is too much chat without the full facts. It's possible that the Umpires invited and accepted the appeal after tea had started, though the stumps were broken during live play. Not sure what happens then. Unfortunate, as neither side intended sharp pracitce IMO. Ironically John Holder was on TMS earlier answering difficult umpiring questions like this.

Definitely a victory for that hard-to-define quality 'sportsmanship'. But inevitably over analysed by the TMS team...

A proper Test match though, although the Indians don't seem to be living up to the hype, but I was enjoying Peterson redux (has he grown up) and Morgan's bizarre stance.

BBC should supply us with an ignore button for Boycott, once he gets one of his hectoring rants....[I bet he spits when he talks]....

While many Indians were berating Dhoni for withdrawing his appeal, the Indian captain was actually using a clever piece of reverse psychology by reinstating Bell. It should not go unremarked that Bell only made a further twenty odd runs after the break. Indeed, it is rare in these cases for a player to capitalise on his second chance, subconsciously aware as they are of their own guilt. One only has to remember how galvanized New Zealand were, back in 08, after Paul Collingwood, the then England skipper, refused to recall Grant Elliott after Ryan Sidebottom had unceremoniously poleaxed the kiwi.

Dhoni did well, therefore. in making capital of an ostensibly sporting gesture, in a manner which would have done credit to Machiavelli, to prevent England from feeding off this feeling of injustice.

It does seem to me that the umpires were at fault. Rule 23.1(b) should have applied - the ball is dead when in the opinion of the bowler's end umpire, the fielders and both batsmen have ceased to regard it as in play. That the fielding side could break the wicket without any sign of rejoicing at a dismissal should have been ample evidence. Law 27.1 should also have applied - the umpire cannot give a batsman out without an appeal by a fielder. If the umpire has to ask whether the fielders are appealing, they aren't!

I would have thought that a batsman could only be run out if he leaves his ground with the intention of making a run (and that the law on this should be clarified).

I did not find the contempt for Bell expressed by Boycott (and Vaughan) pleasant.

But cricket is not always played in a way that justifies its proverbial status as an example of sportsmanship.

Boycott should be put in a closed room with a recording of himself ; 'going on and on'....for oooo several days....[and he still wouldn't see the point, and would consider himself in the right]

...ah well that was yesterday! ... loadsa runs and Dravid out for 6 .... and Broad smashed 44, Bresnan 90 quick time .... i thought Aggers got it right that Bell thought it was a four and the ball was dead because of the fielder's reaction, so did the crowd .... good sportsmanship and tactics by the Indian Captain and his colleagues

i must say my appreciation for Blofers is growing, is there something wrong with me ....?

both Boycott and Vaughan are Yorkshire players, hard headed and brash with it, they would not withdraw that appeal in Yorkshire .....

Tuffers was saying yesterday that the England batting was deeper and the seam attack better ... so England to win, his prognosis is looking good today but who knows what Tendulkar can achieve?
