For 30 and more years now the Stalinist/Maoist leadership of the CCCP has maintained its political monopoly and the effective say-so of the West, on the grounds that the bureaucracy opted for growth on the Western model; and where in the meantime was there even a Hong Kong whisper of a demand for democracy under British rule? This may be one reason why we hear so little in the way of declarations of support beyond moral platitudes from Western leaders, or demonstrations of solidarity abroad, other than from Chinese students and ex-pat communities - another being the dominance China as achieved over the global economy, especially the US's ambivalence as a consequence of its periodic indebtedness to that country - a case of alternating mutual back-scratching that has effectively put the fates of both economies constantly at stake while the rest of us look on.

The other critical issue, namely whether it will be possible for China to continue with levels of capitalist growth commensurate with improving lifestyle changes among its general populace (disregarding those of the ever-growing income and owhership gap) in ways non-damaging to its ecological support systems: are they still constructing and opening coal mines, or is the country now moving in the direction of reliance on renewables? I don't know. What one knows is that climatologically and pollution-wise China is suffering; and how long can the government keep on relying on suppressing the rights of ethnic and religious minorities far distant from Beijing, as are about to be shown in tonight's Panorama exposé, before the whole thing blows up in their face?

From "our" point of view, the issue most pressing is "our" dependence on China's continued "success" as a growing capitalist megapower.
