    Yes, I remember: a great day.

    But already passing into History (like everything else I suppose). Furthermore, a good example of the near-impossibility of predicting the future. I don't recall many commentators predicting this in the years before (although I am open to correction).

      Yes, I remember it all very well indeed. It was an extraordinary time in many respects both personally and historically.

      Did anyone else here make their way to Berlin soon after and pick up one of the many pieces of the Wall (allegedly) that were for sale? I had already been to East and West Berlin in 1980 so it was quite something for me to return 10 years later and walk from East to West and back in complete freedom without being intimidated by the East German border guards at Checkpoint Charlie.

      I felt like someone out of a John le Carre novel as I used the pedestrian route (not for the faint-hearted) through Checkpoint Charlie in 1980 but it was fascinating to do it the hard way and as a consequence I had a special interest in watching events unfold in 1989.
