Rugby World Cup: We're not out yet ......

Great performance by the England XV. The 25% of me that's Irish is now hoping to see the back of New Zealand.
I've been impressed by ITV's commentators, especially when they produce such a gem as: 'Golden thread by golden thread, Australia are unravelling'.

As a fellow quarter-Irishman, can I just please ask - what in blazes are you going on about, LMD?

(When I saw the Thread title I thought it was the start of another Breaksit topic - but unless the New Zealand & Australia reference is to a Trade Deal hidden away in recent negotiations ... )

For those who do not follow Rugby Union, it is quarter-final weekend for the Rugby (Union) World Cup. Results so far:

        Australia 16 - England 40
        Ireland 14- New Zealand 46

Oh ... sport! I see - thank you, Historian.

With apologies to LMcD, I shall adjust the Thread title slightly to make this clear.

I too initially thought that the thread title was referring to a different sort of contest. The Rugby World Cup (Union) will finish on 2nd November. As for the other...

No apology required - the admittedly misleading title was just my way of encouraging at least some of those who are still following the Br*x*t psychodrama to consider the possibility that the events which, for some of us, are the really big story of the weekend, might be more enjoyable - at least Rugby fans enjoyed 2 decisive results whereas the Parliamentary proceedings seem destined to go on for quite a while yet.
New Zealand were absolutely awe-inspiring, and it was a privilege to watch, even though my Irish quarter got a right hammering. There was only 1 yellow card, Nigel Owens had a very good match as usual, there were no 'handbags' and the fans behaved impeccably - as Rugby fans always do.
England were also pretty impressive, and next week's semi-final should be a real cracker.

....a wonderful play I thought was by Jonny May [his first try] He crossed from left wing to support and ruck with Watson on the right, 10 seconds later he is full tilt on left to score....amazing....

Is rugby coming home, at this point in time ?

( Quarter Irish, Quarter Scottish, half Yorkshire by blood, as that seems to be required info )

Pretty certain I qualify for a Yorkshire passport .

Edit, pretty impressive perfomance by our brave lads, but next week looks the ultimate test.

The Watson interception try was the highlight, for me.

Sinkler’s try was pretty special too; he picked a beautiful line and then managed a startling turn of pace for a prop. I loved Eddie Jones’ description of him as a runaway rhino.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I'm getting rather tired of being told that England haven't played in a Rugby World Cup final for 12 years. There have only been 2 finals since they lost to South Africa in 2007. On the other hand, it's been 53 years since England were last in a Soccer World Cup final, since when there have been 13.

Two teams that are both serial underachievers, then?

Anyway, we’re all rugby fans round here for tomorrow.

Could be that England win two major world cups in a single year. Whodda thought?

The England soccer team has rarely if ever during my lifetime come anywhere near achieving the potential we’re so often told exists. I have my own suspicions about footie as an industry but as I’m not a forensic accountant I’d best keep them to myself. Rugby on the other hand......this should be a great game this morning. Fingers crossed for the country’s second world title in a major sport this year (no super over equivalent though, please,).
