But. I don’t really understand the final play in the Browns / Chiefs game, and why it brought things to an end with more than a minute in the clock.

If Richard or indeed teams have a little time to explain, I’d be grateful!!

Right, heading to New Orleans now for a while before bed!

IIRC, they got a first down,( brilliant play out to the right which fooled everybody including the commentators ) and with less than one minute to go, running the clock down was a formailty from there , esp as the Browns were out of time outs.

As very much a part time enthusiast, I find some reporting on NFL a bit tricky to follow. However, oldest son is nuts about the game, ( and very knowledgeable) and every time I ask him the slightest thing, I get a 15 minute answer.
He tells me the Packers are a cert tonight. I’ll be tuning in, warming up with Debussy and Ravel string quartets.

Disappointing indeed for the Browns, but son tells me that next year they will be ready for the big push. I have saddled him with the Browns as our team, and what with our other sports teams, we could do with something in the trophy cabinet !!

Have you ever got yourself to one of the London NFL games Nick ? Fantastic occasions. Saw Browns/ Vikes a couple of years ago at Twickers .

The recording expired before I got to see the end...on my machine it won’t automatically record the whole game and they always run into the next time slot...
I just watched the You Tube, which show the Chiefs getting that first down. In theory they should have been able to down the ball twice and end the game there.

          .
....yes that's it....a first down means quarter back can run out the time between the downs (4)and theorectically take a knee i.e. not play....he can do this 4x

Yes, why did they not go for the TD + 2 point conversion to tie the game? I wasn't watching and haven't seen any commentary on this, but there must have been some reason for that decision.

Not unhappy, though - the Bucs were the first NFL team I saw live (late 1970s, when they were a fairly new franchise), so they have always been a favourite. As it happens, the only other team I've been to see are the Bills (late 1980s). So I was rather hoping for a Bucs vs Bills Super Bowl, but sadly it looks like the Bills were comfortably beaten in the end.

The Bills had a great year, but were badly outplayed in their previous two playoff games yet managed to prevail in them, and so they ran out of luck against KC, which when Mahommes is playing, is the best team in the NFL.
As far as the commentary on Green Bay, it has been scornful in the extreme. Their coach has really done a fantastic job since his arrival 2 years ago, but that bonehead decision will haunt him forever. Of course the Packers are our arch rivals, so his decision was a fine birthday present for me.

Thanks rfg - I'll be interested to hear the comments on that Packers decision in our (BBC) NFL highlights show on Saturday, no doubt they will be very scathing!

I take it you would have the Chiefs as strong favourites on 7th Feb then?

                            (and belated happy birthday!)

The Chiefs should be favored, but with Tom Brady on the other side, I don’t know how strong the preference will be. Tampa needs to pressure Mahommes as they did Aaron Rodgers, and Tampa’s receivers drop to many balls and will no doubt be intimidated by the stage they are on. And KC has just so many weapons

Just finished watching the second game, glad to return to this thread and catch up on comments.

TBB @ GBP the more exciting game, as in the one I’ve just watched KCC (once they settled down) clearly a class apart from the BBs...
