And as since 1066 our monarchs have been variously Norman, French, Welsh, Scots, Dutch, and German - but never English -
They were Vikings and Saxons before that. Perhaps Boudicca was the last British monarch, though I'm not sure about the Scottish lineage.

The Silurian bias on this Forum is despicable! Why don't we hear more Eocene Music mentioned here? I shall complain to the Chief Host!

... I think the rot set in when those lipids started forming themselves in to protocells. And don't get me started on them upstart unicellular organisms!

The country's never going to get out of its present mess if we don't compromise. So … I suppose it would be OK to programme the occasional piece by some foreigner chap or chapess, as long as he or she came from one of the few countries we're still friends with, but I think the conductor of the BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation's No. 1 orchestra should, as a rule, be BRITISH. One of very few exceptions would have been the late Andre Previn, who proved his love of this country by training to become a conductor of a London bus. And Bernard Haitink would be acceptable because, like most Dutch people, he speaks better English than many native Brits.
You flaw your own argument by making exceptions, but then AP and Uncle Bernie were never BBCSO bosses. I am more annoyed with Chief Conductors of British orchestras and they do not embrace British music - Abbado topped that list at the LSO - yes a great conductor and I love most of his recordings but I would have been fascinated to know what he would have done with eg Elgar 1, Tintagel or RVW 2!

                      'The rest is silence'.

I think we need to address the vexed issue of 'British' composers, conductors and performers who hailed from places that were once part of the UK but are now in Eire.
Commonwealth composers and performers could be given Pre-Permanent Settlement status if they can name every British Last Night Of The Proms conductors since … oh, let's say 1909.
A special sub-committee is looking into the case of Georg Friedrich Ha(e)ndel, who might qualify on grounds of residence.
Edward German might pose a problem.

Longer than anyone else according to a certain gentleman on Breakfast this morning talking about revisions to 'Lascia la spina' to wit 1707, 1737, 1957. More like Post-Permanent Settlement...
