    Radio Three startup

Petroc mentioned hearing that another BBC station starts up with an air raid siren - and wondered what Radio Three might do.

I think a fanfare would be good - plenty of scope to change which one from month to month.

My starter for ten is the opening bars of Janacek's Sinfonietta.

    Any other suggestions?

Which station has the air-raid siren? I ask so that I can avoid it. I was born in Liverpool in 1940 and one of my earliest memories is of the sirens. Gives me the horrors. One time we were in Chester where the fire-engines used the same sort of sirens and I hid in a doorway, to the astonishment of my husband!

Given the segue that has developed between Through the Night and Breakfast - where the TTN presenter signs off when announcing the last item of the programme, and the back-announcement comes from the Breakfast presenter - I'm not at all sure that a fanfare, air raid siren or anything extraneous would fit.

When Classic FM launched, it had a little faux-baroque fanfare that introduced this and that, but I believe it's not now used. I thought it rather arch at the time.

I think that broadasting a restful piece of music, unannounced to commence Breakfast would be a tasteful innovation.

(I have previously reminisced on these boards about a station in Newhaven, Connecticut, which preceded the first programme of the day with bridsong followed by a movement from the Holberg Suite or Ancient Airs and Dances - I can't now recall - a lovely start to the day. Another boarder identifed the presenter of the classical music programme which followed, from my post.)

I remember when, after a night of silence, Radio 3 began with Vaughan Williams' Dives and Lazarus. Incredibly moving.

Are you sure you don't mean Job, not Dives and Lazarus?

Yes, you're right Pulcinella, there was certainly Job, but I'm sure I also remember Dives and Lazarus on occasion

Might it have been the 'Pavane Of The Sons of the Morning' - that would seem appropriate?
I agree with kernelbogey - as Radio 3 never stops, it doesn't really need a 'start-up'.
