Not good to mock people under time pressure to give an answer either, lots of us would say anything that came into our heads rather than say nothing. Maybe it's different when there's time to consider. The "Who wrote Handel's Messiah/Water Music?" clip is funny IMO (see my post above) The studio audience thought so.

Sorry, I didn't notice. I don't really 'do' mnemonics, I find them at least as hard to remember as the originals they represent! Anyway how often do we need to know the planets or the rainbow colours? It's really only for quizzes, which is where we came in...

The poor presenter was obviously quite thrown by this utter surrealism. A pity no-one could ask for an explanation, though I would imagine neither of them knew the meaning of 'mnemonic'.
Seemingly people where I work do not know either, I repeatedly hear them referred to as pneumonics!

I'm sure Colin Matthews would agree with you.

Pluto had planetary status when I was at school. Think about poor Pluto, Walt Disney's cartoon dog. Born 1930 it's probably dead now.

We never used mnemonics when I was at school, though I knew the colours of the rainbow.

I remember Richard Of York Gained Battles In Vain for the colours of the rainbow - but frankly it's easier just to remember the planets than that mnemonic

Same here - yet, when I entered 'Richard of York' in my search engine, it was the slightly different '.... gave battle ...' that came up first.
