    Ties

I've had it with the patronising 'down with the public' media thing with journalists / MPs etc who insist on NOT wearing ties to show they are really with the ordinary working man stich.

It is noticeable that most European / American diplomats / news people etc DO wear ties and look well-dressed and above all SERIOUS and professional. The older a man is, the WORSE he looks without a tie - and comically and perversely wearing a dark suit to go with it.

    It looks ridiculous and embarrassing.

Just watching Nick Robinson thus dressed interviewing serious players in the Brexit scene. Awful.

No. I am more interested in what they say.

No woman in a burqa (or a hijab or a burkini) has ever done me any harm. But I was sacked (without explanation) by a man in a suit. Men in suits missold me pensions and endowments, costing me thousands of pounds. A man in a suit led us on a disastrous and illegal war. Men in suits led the banks and crashed the world economy. Other men in suits then increased the misery to millions through austerity. If we are to start telling people what to wear, maybe we should ban suits.
        Suits = ties IMV

Yes, precisely: if you are wearing a suit, then a tie is what you do with the neck.
I'm all for people wearing casual clothes - OK. BUT a suit and open neck?

          Unbecoming and frankly demeaning.

          Not giving in on this.

It matters to some if the result looks a mess, and I would so describe an open-necked shirt under a jacket. I have a large collection of ties for every occasion, my particularly favourites being self-tie bow ties.

                  Bring back ties ?

That’s like trying to ge t back into Alcatraz.

Indeed. Why wear a limp Phallic symbol around your neck? Even sillier when it forms part of the compulsory uniform for a girls' school.

Quite agree, mixing formal and casual just looks unprofessional.

I still had my school tie till recently and I still have my house-badge. My dad used to wear my school beret in the garden. Cool!

I seem to remember having a daft argument here (?) years ago with someone who insisted that it made a huge difference to your credibility if you had a new /clean car

                        Wear what you like.

A lot is just convention. Now I find that if I look at a group of “serious” men wearing ties I think they are ridiculous, and playing a silly game. OK - I do wear ties sometimes - but I can’t say there’s something intrinsically good, or obviously aesthetically pleasing about ties. I don’t do it myself - not so far anyway - but I don’t think that open neck with suits looks bad at all.

Also, shirts are problematic. How many men wash and iron their shirts? I suspect not many. Shirts are significantly more labour intensive than more casual wear, and guess who is probably going to do the labour.

I do, but not for reasons you have considered.
One of the few textile industries that still survives in the UK is silk textile manufacture and we still make extraordinarily fine silk textiles for manufacturers and designers throughout the world and that includes tie designers and manufacturers. Anything that weakens the very long-established companies that make these textiles and the supreme levels of skill their employees possess is to be deplored. We have lost so many traditional skills it is a minor miracle that they still survive and continue to employ the modern heirs to the great textile designers and a weavers of the past. In their small way ties make a contribution to this survival.

Mind you there is a certain American who wears a tie two foot longer than any other! I dislike the fashion of suits without ties!
