Jayne, I'm not surprised you feel the need to sound off, that's really not what you want or need to have happen is it? Doesn't help the hospital either, having a "missed appointment" - which I hope doesn't go on your record as your fault?
RichardB, these days being told before you get to the hospital can be seen as adequate notice; it's when patients are in, prepped and waiting to go to theatre, then get cancelled that the notice is inadequate...

I'm afraid it probably will go down as my fault, even if I phone and explain... its just how inefficient bureaucracy works. Hence Kafka, Universal Credit etc etc...

Calming down, I looked at the detail of the letter. It told me to drink 2 Litres of water before attending, and the same afterward. Despite the high-bicarbonate Badoit mineral water I keep (many 0.5L bottles under the stairs, transferred daily to fridge) to be able to eat anything at all, I only take small sips; there's just no way I can take so much, without "significant discomfort" and even worse arryhthmia. So, back to start.... I'll try to call them in the week if I feel brave enough...

But now for....The Walk! Walking is Good. Lets see how far I get today. There might be Redwings, Fieldfares, Mistle Thrushes again...

Yikes. If I had to drink that much I'd never get to the appointment, especially first thing in the morning when kidneys are hyperactive at the best of times! Would it be worth writing(as in print/pen on paper, proof of posting, and photocopy of letter) to explain that the appointment letter arrived several days too late? Easier and less time consuming (these days) than telephoning?
            Hope the walk delivers.

I really DO hope things work out for you jayne, and sooner rather than later. My computer expert has been in Kings College hospital for over a week, each day being told the heart valve implant he's there for will be done the next day. I think even he's become aware that words of sympathy from Yours Truly start sounding like a stuck record when he phones from there; Facebook links to a Corbyn supporting site which were coming thick and fast up to 2 days ago have dried up, indicating hopefully that he's been operated on and awaiting being moved to a general ward; so one wishes him all the best in the hope of no news being good news, and waits.....

At "0750 AM". Say again? 0750 AM.

I think my heating system has broken down the last couple of days (the good news is that my gas has only cost 18p today as the heating didn't come on this morning or this evening).

Is it possible for the programmer to go wrong as it seems to register an unvarying 18º? The heating is set to come on if the temperature falls below 18º. It certainly doesn't feel like 18º.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Possibly: my programmer communicates wirelessly with the boiler (via an interediate switching device). I have to replace the batteries occasionally so that it can continue to communicate.

But you may need to get hold of a specialist technician....

Yes, mine is wireless. I have replaced the batteries once but then it put up a little message telling me to do so, which it isn't at the moment. If it is just that the programmer is transmitting the wrong information, I wonder if I put the temperature at which it's set to come on at below 21º, instead of 18º) that would trigger the boiler - because it definitely isn't 21º at the moment. I shouldn't know if it had worked until tomorrow morning as the heating isn't due to come on again until then (Thank goodness for the logburner).

Ah, well, I'll just go to bed early (like every New Year's Eve )

I suppose it's possible that the pilot light on the boiler has gone out: this once happened to me with an older boiler. Not necessarily an easy DIY fix.

Good luck getting the logs in.

And a happy and warm new year to you!

I'm assuming, as you haven't mentioned one, that you don't have a manual to consult. If so is it worth looking up the make online to see if there is anything of use there? If you look at the front panel of the boiler (on mine it's behind a drop down flap) is there anything amiss there which might have made it unresponsive, possibly as a safety measure. Taking out the battery and re-inserting it might help - the contacts might be less than adequate. If it's a combi boiler does it still come on if hot water is run?

I'll check. To be honest, I've never really fathomed the programming thingy on the actual boiler. Yes, it's a combi, and yes the hot water is working.

[There is something satisfying about warming the homemade bread and heating the homemade fish soup on top of the stove. It's certainly very warm and snug in the back room so I think I'll wait until tomorrow morning before exploring further.]
