That's an option (and we certainly got up earlier today to take advantage of what light there is; a load of washing is in, and I've had a cup of coffee outdoors, sitting on the bench out front — a bit chilly!) but for most people, their 'day' does not centre on 12:00 GMT.

I suppose you can do that by not altering your clocks and getting up an hour earlier/later, mentally adjusting throughout the day.

I keep looking for a forum setting which means I don't have to get up at 2am and alter the clock, but it has a default (set at GMT) and then you manually enable DST. So I imagined it would default to GMT this morning - but it didn't. It has to be reset twice a year for the benefit of anyone not logged in. Members can select their own time setting.

I am open to correction (eg by Andrew who will tell me what I'm supposed to do).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I'm using Windows 10 and my time and date section has a notice that DST will end at 12:00. It is currently showing BST but I will have another look after midday (maybe at old noon, i.e. .3 pm).

I'm also on Windows 10 and the time hadn't changed to GMT this morning despite having DST automatically set to change. Didn't see any notice about changing at 12.00.

In the time and date section in Settings I clicked on 'sync now' and the correct (GMT) time came up.

Be thankful for small irriations - my 2 year old Windows 10 laptop died last week - just about 2 years since purchase! No Windows 10 fault but faulty electronics!

Which manufacturer? Iknow they nearly all use the same component sources, but some aspects of assembly and quality of soldering, etc. might be involved. HP, for instance, have a relatively poor reputation in terms of the longevity of their products.

Mine's an Acer Extensa purchased in July 2019 and been ok up till now (madly touching wood). Only annoying problem I have is the occasional sticking cursor which necessitates a reboot.

Asus. Any recommendations for reliable replacements?

My wee bedside radio alarm, which I've had for several years since finding it in one of the dustbins here - there was nothing wrong with it, just a plug fuse needing replacement - has to be re-programmed for GMT/BST by means of a press button which serves just that one purpose. On pressing it last night it went forward an hour instead of backwards. Most odd, as I have no memory of changing it manually since the spring!

And a dark one is nigh - for most of us an hour earlier than yesterday but for you it’ll be coming up to 8.00pm.

It's virtually pitch dark already - just a faint greenish post-sunset glimmer in the west.

Not immediately. Asus tend to have a reasonable reputation for reliability. I have found Acers pretty long-lasting and robust. The laptop I use most is Lenovo but it's only around 3 years old. An Acer I bought over 10 years ago, since upgraded to Windows 10 and still accepting OS updates, has never been problematic, though I did replace the hard drive with an SSD earlier this year (not that the hard disc had failed - I still use it as an external drive). Both HP laptops I have here have exhibited various problems, from keyboard failure to poor quality audio and failure to accept Windows 10 updates. I have therefore converted them to Linux in order to get used to using it. I seem to recall Frances, 'the Member for the Isle of Man', warning agianst HP oroducts some years ago.
