Can somebody please enlighten me as to the attraction which this event seems to hold for some folk An explanation of the involvement of Israel and - even more bizarrely - Australia would also be appreciated. Thank you!

… and why has someone decided it is a good idea to pay the overrated and already overpaid Madonna some hideous sum to appear there - I hope none of it is not coming out of my TV licence payment.
Israel is expected to host the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2019, following Netta Barzilai’s win at the 2018 edition. Israel is shamelessly using Eurovision as part of its official Brand Israel strategy, which presents “Israel’s prettier face” to whitewash and distract attention from its war crimes against Palestinians. Israel massacred 62 Palestinians in Gaza, including six children just two days after its 2018 Eurovision win. That same evening, Netta Barzilai performed a celebratory concert in Tel Aviv, hosted by the mayor, and said, “We have a reason to be happy.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called Barzilai “the best ambassador of Israel,” underlining his far-right government’s art-washing agenda. Palestinians have called on EBU members to boycott Eurovision 2019 if hosted by Israel, regardless of its location.
OR
If "we" win then "we" will have to host a celebration of European cheese next year ?
I have no idea whatsoever what you are referring to?
but suspect it's got something to do with football ?
I think it's a shame that Eurovision is being used as a tool for politics
BUT as Mr Byrne said "same as it ever was"
It IS a microculture of it's own which has little connection to many other musical cultures
I rather liked teamsaint's "vomes", though! That typo (I presume) could have introduced a new word to the English lexicon, one that needs careful definition!
I'm wondering if the choice of Israel for this years competition has anything to do with the BBC's reluctance to shed light of any kind on the Corbyn antisemitism row as being two-sided, including among Jewish people. I could be wrong, of course: how is the locale actually decided? Two members of an Icelandic band due to appear, and barred from having any political content in their presentation, apparently essential to their act, were interviewed on the BBC lunchtime TV news, saying they're not allowed to mention politics at any time, on or even off stage.

The previous years winners home country is where it happens
Hence some folks suggesting a mass campaign to get the British entry winning so that next year we have a celebration of all things European

Oh not a typo, it's ancient 'ampshire dialect .
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Mr. Nigel Farage is campaigning about half a mile down the road from us tonite. I swear if we weren't going to hear the RSNO tonite we would be protesting! The cheeky bugger is charging £2.50 per skull for admission!!

Channel 4 news had a devastating report on Farage last night, where he was followed around, and adamantly stonewalling questions as to how he was being funded, and by whom. (Woops, better be careful there!) I hope enough people who have not chosen to sacrifice their integrity-monitoring antennae managed to see that.

Although the Eurovision Song Contest has rarely managed to avoid politics - you only need to see who does or doesn't vote for Cyprus and how the countries that were part of what was Yugoslavia vote for or against one another - but I must confess that the link between Nigel Farage and tomorrow's 'musical' extravaganza eludes me....

A brief and I'm sure temporary diversion, as so often happens and gets quickly rectified on this forum.
