The Eurovision Song Contest is a pathetic irrelevance . British (and Irish) pop and rock musicians are by both artistic and financial yardsticks the (second) most successful in the world.

The way the contest appears to work now, the songs need to really stand out, either because they are a novelty, or are very professionally performed and presented. In either case, they also need to have very high production values. For a long time now, the UK's entries have been mediocre, and have been performed by unknown performers who quickly sink back to well-deserved obscurity. They are simply amateurish in comparison with the songs put forward by most other countries. In the circumstances, its hardly a surprise that they do so badly year after year."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
