You mean great songs like this ?

"SOMEONE LEFT THE CAKE OUT IN THE RAIN
I DON’T THINK THAT I CAN TAKE IT
’CAUSE IT TOOK SO LONG TO BAKE IT
AND I’LL NEVER HAVE THAT RECIPE AGAIN
          OH, NO!"

Actually, I don't know what you mean because "pop" music is rather different these days.

Yes that’s the kind of thing. Well of course pop music is different these days, I’ve already said that - there used to be pop music which was all encompassing, then some of it became ‘rock’ because somebody thought pop was just for teenyboppers and not serious enough - I know how much you love genres - but they evolved and got in the way. But I haven’t got time today to be wound up by you!

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
              I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day (Night and day)
Spread my wings and fly away
              I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
              I believe I can fly
              I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly hoo
See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me, ho oh
If I can see it hoo, then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
              I believe I can fly
I believe… [Ah can flah] - repeat ad infinitum

Used to be better in the old days

I enjoyed the take on how UK could do better in the song contest as BBC R4's 'More or Less' took us through the statistics of what the UK have been doing wrong these last thirty years, or however long it's been. Too many major keys is one of the faults, apparently.

The stats behind making a successful song, plus misunderstanding Victorian court records.

It's high time we all went back to the Old Church Modes, I say; then we'd all know where we are again.

Norway and Austria have each confused the Eurovision Song Contest with Pointless on 4 occasions, but the UK still leads the world as the first country to score nul points since the voting system was changed with the aim of making it almost impossible to do so. Let us hold our heads up high!

I'm sure that Bozo Johnson will be on the box shortly to have a dig at the Beeb for promoting a poor impression of our GREAT country.

Was there really going to be any other outcome - an awful song, badly sung and most of Europe not really been very keen on the UK - the ‘perfect storm’ (not my favourite cliche but probably OK for this purpose) for a big 0.
