It's always been shepherds for me, possibly as I've always lived inland.
This evening's sunset was an impressive layer cake affair - alternating bands of black cloud and red sky - which quickly cleared to virtually clear.

It's always been 'shepherds' for me although I've spent most of my life on the coast - indeed, I'd never heard the 'sailor's' version before. We were also taught 'Red sky at morning - shepherd's warning', as this supposedly presaged rain.
