I wasn't too good either and it's never done me any harm". I'm afraid one of us just about exploded at that, and the teacher might have been lucky to get out alive (I exaggerate - of course ...). She was a very nice person, but was doing enormous damage by her approach, or lack of it.
I have come across other people who seem to think it gives them extra prestige - and a form of inverse put down - to admit that they were no good at maths.
