First thing and last thing I often sling on - Brahms Violin Sonatas or Telemann Tafelmusik, fairly quietly, precisely for their calming effect on a too-stressed mind....
Life Changes can often mean listening-changes too. If you're already overstimulated - by intellectual or emotional eventfulness and busy-ness (all too true of younger people today) - a large dramatic orchestral work might not be quite the desirable or necessary thing (catharsis potential notwithstanding).
To be fair to Classic FM, Smooth Classics runs from 2200 - 0100; it does play much livelier music at other times.
And - you might hear a Violin Sonata on your phone and end up going to see a symphony...why not?
The Taylor Swift arrangement highlighted in the piece GG linked to works rather well, doesn't it?
"Blank Space" by Taylor Swift, arranged and performed live on cello and piano by Brooklyn Duo.LISTEN on Spotify: http://spoti.fi/1oPJROuBuy our SHEET MUSIC: ...

I often recall a TS Eliot quote "I rarely go to films; they are too exciting."
(note the carefully semantic weighting...)
Music can have that effect too sometimes. It's all about what's on the inside...Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 20-02-19, 17:32.

Not sure about the reference to 'classical DJs - I don't htink it's got quite that bad on R3 -yet.
Mayo launched his ace new classical radio network with some jaunty mocking of his former BBC bosses. Classical DJs should brace themselves for battle
I see we are not just old fogies... [from BTL comment to the above]
Most classical broadcasting (and these days that includes most output on R3) is just a vulgar wallow in the mud for knackered old rhinos.

Gillian Reynolds in the Sunday Times " …. The Music? If you like Rick Wakeman playing piano versions of Beatles hits, or bits of Bizet, or Bryn Terfel with hits from musicals, you'll find it all here. Over and over again. And again the next day. And the one after that. Don't expect careful pronunciation or useful attribution. This isn't Radio 3 or Classic FM. Nor is it meant to be. It's nice-tunes radio"
She ends her piece praising the Andre Previn Mixtape ……..
