Thanks, ferney, for your research, I've used your links and ordered two of Leinsdorf volumes. I suspect they will both enthral and annoy me - American gush not being my favourite cuppa.
When Apollo 14 landed I was somewhat distracted by the end of my second pregnancy. I do remember it, but very foggily and with hands firmly clasped over my belly. Said baby is now deputy head of an excellent London primary school...
Yesterday it was being remarked, on several social media, apparently, how much Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex, and try saying that repeatedly, very fast) was to be seen clutching her belly. On a phone-in, someone suggested her reason for doing this might be to alleviate some of the weight! Nobody on the show batted an eyelid after this was read out!!!

Well, "American gush" with a healthy dollop of the authentic Viennese variety. (But "enthral and annoy" in equal measure is about right.)

The United Nations International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation - surely one of the most unfortunately-chosen names for an otherwise essential cause (suggesting, as it does, that it's tolerated all the other days!)
On this day, in 1685, James II/VII becomes King - the last "officially recognised" Roman Catholic monarch of what became known in the reign of his daughter as the UK; the French recognise the new nation of the United States of America, and sign the Treaty of Amity in which both nations pledge mutual support in the event of military hostilities from the British (1778); Singapore is founded by Thomas Stamford Raffles (1819); Maori chiefs sign the Treaty of Waitangi agreeing to become a British colony in exchange for protection from the French (1840); the Virginia Minstrels perform the first recorded "blackface" Minstrel show in the Bowery Ampitheater in New York (1843); the Representation of the People Act is passed in Parliament, enabling property-owning women over the age of 30 to vote (1918); Elizabeth II becomes Queen (1952); the Munich Air Disaster results in the deaths of 23 passengers of BEA Flight 609, eight of them members of the Manchester United Football Team (1958); the first test firing of a Trident Intercontinental ballistic missile at Cape Canaveral (1959); talks between the Polish Government and the Solidarity Union in Poland begin (1989); Russian troops capture Grozny, ending the second Chechen War, and forcing the independence leaders into exile ((2000).
Birthdays include: Queen Anns (as played by Olivia Colman - 1665; so her father became king on her 20th birthday); Giuseppe Sammartini (1695); Henry Irving and Max Bruch (both 1838); Xaver Scharwenka (1850); Alexander Scriabin (1872); Henry Blogg, the most decorated Lifeboatsman in the history of the RNLI (1876); Babe Ruth (1895); Claudio Arrau and Maurice Abravanel (both 1903); Ronald Reagan (1911); Eva Braun and Christopher Hill (both 1912); Zsa-Zsa Gabor (1917); Patrick Macnee and Denis Norden (both 1922); Fred Trueman (1931); Francois Truffaut (1932); and Bob Marley (1945).
Last days for Johannes Ockeghem (1497); Charles II (1685); Capability Brown (1783); Joseph Priestley (1804); Isabella ("Mrs") Beeton (1865 - at the age of 28); Gustav Klimt (1918); George VI (1952); Ben Nicholson (1982); Dandy Nicholls (1986); Jack Kirby and Norman Del Mar (both 1994); Andre Brink (2015); and Alec McCowan (2017).
And on Monday, 6th February, 1989, the morning schedules were:
Morning Concert: Short pieces by J Strauss II, Brahms, Elgar, Drdla, and Mendelssohn; and Schubert's Fantasia in f minor (D040), and Ravel's La Valse. Composers of the Week: Hilding Rosenberg and Vagn Holmboe. Sonatas & Soliloquies: Chamber Music by Torelli, Boehm, Feld, Beethoven (attrib), Albinoni, Honegger, Finzi, Giuliani, Nieman (first performance), Biber, Dodgson, Hue, and Foss.

Just finished David Daiches's excellent 1973 biog of Prince Charles Edward, who was of course Prince Regent for the rightful King James VIII/III - on this day in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie arrived at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, for a three-day stay on the way north towards his appointment with destiny on 21 March at Culloden.

"Rightful" only applies as the word to use if the rules on which the "rights" are based are upheld, People at the time obviously decided that the rules were flawed, and in the absence of a god to refer to - perhaps under the Divine Right of Kings - which I suspect was a spurious man made concept - he did not become king, nor was he entitled to.
... ahem, the Act of Union was 1707 - I don't think Jas: II was a monarch of the UK. (The fact that he was II & VII a bit of a clue... )
.
Avant la lettre perhaps? He would separately have been King of Scotland and King of England & Ireland (which would have incorporated the principality).
