There are ways of people's contributions to society being recognised without receiving something called the "Order of the British Empire" on the one hand, or joining the rollcall of horrific specimens like Jimmy Savile, Rolf Harris, Cyril Smith etc. on the other.

... Messiaen was accorded the Grand-croix de la Légion d'honneur *, which wd outrank the ordre des Arts et des Lettres ; the fact that Boulez didn't get any such bauble makes me think he turned them down - I'm sure the French establishment wd have offered...
