What did Santa Claus bring you?

Mrs. PG and I had Christmas Day today since I'm working tomorrow. My 'star present' was the Szeryng Big Box from Decca. I've only dipped in but what I've heard so far is terrific.

I'm away from home at the moment, but I bought myself this for when I return:

      So far, I have:

      Money
      Socks (hiking, quite nice)
      Money
      A concert ticket
      Honey (I shit you not)
      Money

The rest I haven't managed to suss.

Isn't giving money worse than giving vouchers? Three family members are too lazy to even get an Amazon voucher. I'm not impressed and will reap revenge tomorrow (I'll think of something).

Stick the money in your wallet and get something off Amazon for the same value. It'll be there by the New Year.

A CD by a well-established quartet of Bristol-based free jazzers - tenor saxophonist and bass clarinettist Mark Langford, guitarist Phil Gibbs, bassist Paul Anstey and drummer Bob Helsen, titled Fringe Activity, sent to me by the guitarist.

I have yet to listen to any of the CDs recorded in 2017 or 2018 which I have acquired this year!

Already managed to top a ton in PrestoClassical vouchers... and it's not even Christmas yet!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

My star turn was the complete Brendel Philips recordings.

I believe this to be out of print now so suspect good old dad had to dig fairly deep at the marketplace.

I might start with some of his Liszt

The DG Chopin Complete Edition (various artists), I'm revisiting Chopin more systematically after reading the Alan Walker biog which is also packed with musical analysis. Also (see Beppe's recent thread) complete Marta by Flotow with Lucia Popp et al - my second version, having lived with the Anneliese Rothenberger on LP for 50 years.

Yes, and not compilation discs from the complete operas, a series of recitals from different singers. You have to get it, Beefy! I'm addicted to the Naive series.

I may well get that set. I'm not addicted to the Naïve Vivaldi series - just a bit obsessed, dependent and completely fanatical.

Knowing my preference for autochthony, Santa decided to cure me of some of my prejudice by ensuring that I heard my present before handing it to me. So I had a delightful time listening to Verbum Caro Factum Est by the Suzukis and the Bach Collegium Japan. There is some splendid singing, in arrangements that often swerve into unexpected directions, interspersed with Noëls by Daquin on a modern but classical organ. I cannot comment on the pronunciation since I usually have difficulty understanding the words in choral singing even in a piece I know well. A charming CD: it is a very long time since I felt compelled to replay a new one immediately. I recommend it unreservedly.
